The Moments That Make a Father
Celebrating Father's Day with an overnight French toast bake full of juicy blueberries and topped with crunchy brown sugar cinnamon streusel.
Note: Several people have emailed me to say this story made them weep. I was touched that I was able to connect with them so deeply, but the feedback also made me consider removing this post, as my intention was not to make you sad. On the rare occasions that I share a story, the purpose is always to lift you up.
In this post, I wanted to honor all the incredible men out there who understand it is not biology but rather the moments they spend with their children that make a father. I also wanted to show how each of us has the power to control what we pass on to our children. ❤️
In the early 1970s my father joined the U.S. Army fresh out of high school. He was stationed in Germany and one afternoon all the recruits were called into an auditorium where they were informed that half of them would be headed to Vietnam. An officer ascended the stage, raised his arm, then swung it down in one motion, cutting the room in half. Those on the left remained in Germany, while those on the right would soon be in the thick of it. Within a year my father had become a sharpshooter assigned to take out targets with a single shot.
